The Clockless Clock
Project home page
This is a book project based on research on temporality conducted primarily during my 2019-20 fellowship at the Berggruen Institute. Draft chapters will be linked on this page as I write them.

Chapter 2: Indoors in Time 🔒
Baby Eons: A side-quest on aionic time. I might integrate this into a rewrite of Chapter 1.
Pitchdark Futures: A note on why the most imaginable futures are not necessarily the most likely ones, and future blindsight.
The Depth of Time: A note on the relationship between the notion of “deep time” and the notion of a “depth of field” in optics.
Future Tables: A note on pseudo-determinacy in time conceptualized as “future tables.”
Eventfulness: Cleaning up the definitions of chronos, kairos, and aion to get at more complex notions.
The Long 2022: A note on a liminal year, and an associated model of periodization based on big mood shifts.
History After History: An extended analogy between the End of History theory and Darwin’s evolutionary hypothesis in natural history.
Thick Time: Exploring a subtle temporality based on a notion called the adjacent ephemeral, based on riffing on the idea of follow through in racket/bat based sports.
The Clockless Clock is something of a sequel to my first book, Tempo (2011). If you're interested in this broad theme, you may want to check that out.
I will be building on some of the ideas from that book in this one. To receive new chapters or research notes as I write them, consider subscribing to this newsletter.
